The Future of Marvel Studios

Over the past nineteen years, the superhero genre has become a dominant force in the box office and the movie industry. Marvel Studios have provided movies, shows, specials, and everything in between. Throughout its almost twenty-year lifespan, it has provided its community with quality content and tries to continue delivering on the highest front. Recently the Marvel studios have rea; used projects that have had mixed reviews from the community, because of this people have started to believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on a steep decline. Even though some movies haven’t realized the expectations of the fan base this essay shows the multitude of reasons why Marvel Studios can and still make quality,  meaningful works and be at the top of their game. 

The Superhero genre has dominated the box office and movie industry for about nineteen years with the first Spiderman live-action movie being released on May, 3rd 2002. After this, a multitude of different superhero movies was being made with “Iron-man” kick-starting the Marvel studios/ the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Man of Steel (Superman) jump-starting the DC studios and its cinematic universe. Many other studies and companies have now jumped on the Superhero movie train and continue to make new works for people to watch. Most of these movies are based on the source’s material comics. Comics were the first form of superhero entertainment; some of the most well-known comic writers were Stan Lee and Brian Bendis. Now the content from those pages was being put onto the bug screen bringing in old and new fans to enjoy and experience superheroes in a whole new different way. Up until 2019, this was the truth, “Avengers Endgame” changed the superhero movie business, it eventually racked up over two hundred billion dollars at the box office becoming the second highest-grossing movie of all time. Fourteen years of movies built up for one movie one moment and after that Superhero movies as a whole or in some people’s eyes Marvel studies would begin to go on a steep decline. 

After fourteen years of movies, the Marvel cinematic universe would start its fourth phase of releases projects, such as Wanda Vision, Eterenals, Shang-chi, and others. A lot of these projects were looked down upon by fans due to many different factors some being recency bias, what at the time looked like to be subpar CGI and sometimes having to take an additional step towards watching a movie. These problems are brought all almost every time fans converse on the subject of whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe is “dying”. Phase four released eighteen projects which was the same amount of work that had been released in Phase one, two, and three. This was another problem for fans who were less into the Marvel Cinematic Universe because since the beginning of the franchise each work built off on another which was what made it so profitable. So once phase four was made an average fan might have to watch a whole tv show to understand the plot in a movie or a certain new character that is making an appearance in one. 

More recently The Marvel Cinematic Universe is having somewhat of a comeback with new releases being better than what was released before such as Spiderman No Way Home, Black Panther- Wakanda Forever, and Guardians of the Galaxy Three. These movies have some of the highest ratings by fans, not in phase four but in the run time of Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole with Spiderman No Way Home having an audience score of ninety-eight, Black Panther- Wakanda Forever having a ninety-four,  and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 having a ninety-five audience score (Rotten Tomatoes).  

Marvel has been making many moves to not only expand their fanbase but also their Intellectual property extensions (Intellectual property extensions are when a work of art is used in a way that goes beyond its initial form or medium. It entails using the assets and rights connected to intellectual property to produce new goods and services or modifications in various industries or formats) which is further explained in “Intellectual property extensions in entertainment services: Marvel and DC Comics” In the context of entertainment services, intellectual property (IP) extensions entail extending the usage and scope of intellectual properties beyond their initial form. Marvel has used IP extensions to expand its franchises and profit from the success of its characters and plots across many media platforms. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel Studios, a division of The Walt Disney Company, has succeeded in this field. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) consists of several interrelated motion pictures and television programs that include Marvel Comics characters. Marvel has developed a unified and compelling cinematic universe that appeals to viewers all around the world by bringing its intellectual property to the big screen. IP extensions come with many benefits. Fans may enjoy their favorite characters and stories in novel and engaging ways thanks to the study of various storytelling forms made possible by them. Additionally, expanding IP outside of comic books broadens the fan base, improves brand awareness, and opens up new potential for generating income from merchandising, licensing, and other ancillary items. All of this reinforces the argument against the Marvel Cinematic Unvisreise decline because Marvel has generally made good use of IP expansions to profit from its intellectual rights and build huge entertainment empires. They have gained worldwide recognition, financial success, and higher levels of fan interaction by incorporating their characters and tales into a variety of media. Meaning that over the main places of media, Marvel has spread and delivered many pieces of content that are appreciated by many people.  Showing how currently Marvel is doing very well and can continue for the foreseeable future.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a vast fictional world of interconnected superhero movies, television shows, and other media developed by Marvel Studios. Iconic MCU characters include Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and many more.  In the MCU, superheroes are often presented with incredible powers or abilities that they use to protect the planet from various threats. However, they must manage their superhero responsibilities while juggling their personal and, in some cases, professional lives. “Time to Work for a Living: The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Organized Superhero” focuses on the portrayal of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and their relationship with work and organization. The MCU contains several situations that demonstrate the idea that superheroes “have to work for a living”. For example, Tony Stark, popularly known as Iron Man, is not only a superhero but also a multi-million-dollar businessman and inventor. The science and engineering work he runs at Stark Industries plays a big role in his superhero character.  Characters with scientific expertise like Bruce Banner (Hulk) and Peter Parker (Spider-Man) often struggle to balance heroic endeavors and careers. The brilliant scientist Bruce Banner is also known as his alter ego Hulk. High school student Peter Parker must manage schoolwork, a side job, and his role as Spider-Man while battling criminals.  Adrian Acu states that “These blockbusters, popularly perceived as pandering to the mainstream’s appetite for spectacular entertainment, are more than just indexes of their audiences or their industry’s trajectory”  This means that blockbusters have deeper meaning and impact. They can convey deeper messages, explore more complex subjects, and offer social commentary while quenching the audience’s thirst for excitement and joy. Most blockbuster movies are massive productions with huge budgets, intense marketing efforts, and widespread distribution. To appeal to a wide audience, they often incorporate stunning visual effects, action scenes, and compelling narratives. Usually, this kind of movie is considered to be good entertainment. The phrase emphasizes the idea that blockbusters are produced to appeal to the tastes of the general public. This idea suggests that these films are less about presenting creative or thought-provoking ideas than about meeting the need for an aesthetically surprising and evocative experience. This means that blockbusters have deeper meaning and impact. It satisfies the audience’s desire for excitement and fun, while at the same time giving them the ability to engage in deeper debate, dig deeper into difficult issues, and provide social criticism. This demonstrates how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is far from dying out and is still connecting to its audience in a meaning full way. 

Finally, this article demonstrates the things the Marvel Cinematic Universe does very well.  The theme or term “Superhero Fan Service: Audience Strategies in Modern Connected Hollywood Blockbusters” refers to the techniques directors use in modern connected superhero movies to meet the needs and expectations of superhero fans. The term “fan service” means an element of a  media production created specifically to appeal to or satisfy current fans of a particular series or genre. Fanservice in superhero movies may consist of references, easter eggs, or homages to famous characters, stories, or scenes from comics or previous movies. These components are meant to evoke excitement and nostalgia in fans. Marvel Studios also uses “audience strategies”, the word refers to the targeted methods or strategies used by filmmakers to attract and engage with their target audience. Understanding the tastes, expectations, and emotional connections of superhero fans is essential when it comes to superhero movies. To appeal to this particular target niche, filmmakers plan and make innovative decisions. Not only that but it also the Marvel Cinematic Universe uses Contemporary Interlinked Hollywood Blockbuster which means that in this framework, the characters, plots, and events of several films often overlap and influence each other, creating an interconnected world. “Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, Ant-Man, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the television series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel’s Agent Carter are closely interlinked, they can also be understood as distinct entities. In this way, Marvel Studios has crafted a modular system in which parts of the whole can be emphasized and deemphasized as circumstances warrant.” This can all be understood when taking the different aspects of fanservice into account. Including Easter Eggs and References Filmmakers subtly or covertly parody cartoons, famous scenes, or beloved characters, and reward observers who notice and recognize these references. Cameos and Crossover Events are created by filmmakers by combining characters from other films or series. In these surprises, beloved superheroes interact in unexpected ways. Continuity, and Shared Universe The continuity of stories, characters, and world-building across multiple films strengthens the interconnectedness of the franchise. It fulfills fans’ needs for a well-developed and engaging superhero universe. Fan-Preferred Storylines and Adaptations of well-known and adored comic book stories that have a devoted fan base may be given priority by filmmakers, offering fans the chance to see their favorite stories brought to life on the big screen. To please devoted viewers who have followed these characters’ stories for a long time, filmmakers concentrate on offering fulfilling character arcs, emotional moments, and conclusions for protracted tales.

Finally, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has demonstrated its ability to explore deeper themes and provide social commentary while creating engaging and enjoyable entertainment. Marvel Studios continues to produce works that captivate audiences and keep the superhero at the forefront of his genre, despite occasional glaring flaws and difficulties. As long as Marvel Studios remains focused on creative storytelling, audience interaction, and intellectual property expansion, there’s no reason to think the MCU is in serious trouble.
